A report examined the role of community in United Kingdom society and its connection to charitable giving. It said that 44 per cent of adults gave money to their local community, many wanted to be more active in their community, and around half would give more if it was possible to see the direct local impact of the donations.

A think-tank report examined the state of the voluntary and community sector in Britain. It said that reductions in government funding, low levels of charitable giving, and the ongoing concentration of wealth in the larger, professionalized organizations characterized the decline of the sector in recent years. The report said that contracting procedures were bureaucratic (and favoured larger organizations), and coverage by the sector was geographically uneven. It discussed a range of new initiatives and said that a further report would be published in 2014 to outline proposals for the sector.

A study examined the extent and nature of business support for local voluntary and community organizations. It found that support for, and engagement with, the voluntary sector was low, with few organizations receiving financial support from local businesses. However, this varied by location, as wealthier areas tended to have a greater number of small businesses. The study found some examples of positive practice, suggesting there were possible benefits from developing relationships with business.
